Sargent Schools are excited to announce that Catherine Hodgson successfully secured a National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Grant through Colorado Parks and Wildlife to launch a new co-curricular archery program at Sargent!
This initial grant provides the equipment needed to get the program started, including:
10 right-handed Genesis bows and 2 left-handed bows
Bow tree for secure storage
5 Morrell NASP Targets
10 floor quivers
Archery repair kit
Arrow curtain
As the required match to the grant, Sargent will purchase arrows and additional equipment.
What “Co-Curricular” Means
Archery will be incorporated into our PE curriculum for grades 4–12, giving students a structured way to learn the sport during the school day. In addition, a club component will be formed for students interested in competition, with practices scheduled based on gym availability. This club may lead to opportunities to compete at the state level, and potentially at national and world competitions.
Training & Safety
We will identify the next available NASP training so Mr. Flores can earn his Basic Archery Instructor certification and teach archery in 4th and 5th grade PE. Until then, we will use an exchange/support plan with Mrs. Hodgson and Mr. Flores to ensure our elementary students can participate.
NASP safety protocols are known for being strict, consistent, and easy to follow, and we are confident this program will provide a safe, positive learning experience. Students have already been learning the basics and are having a lot of fun.
Thank you to Catherine Hodgson and Colorado Parks and Wildlife for helping bring this exciting opportunity to Sargent!
