On Saturday, November 1, Westen Burkhart reached the highest honors within the National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Organization — receiving his American FFA Degree during the National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
For Westen, this achievement represents years of dedication, leadership, and love for both agriculture and the FFA community. Over his four years at Sargent high school, he served as an officer in the Sargent FFA Chapter for three of those years and was also a District Officer for two years, representing the valley with pride, integrity, and enthusiasm.
Westen’s impact didn’t stop at the local level. In June 2024, he was elected as a State FFA Officer for Colorado, serving as the State Executive Committee Member until June 2025. Through that role, he traveled across the state mentoring FFA members, leading workshops, and spreading his passion for agriculture. Known for his upbeat personality and contagious laughter, Westen left a positive mark on everyone he met, inspiring countless students to pursue their own agricultural dreams.
Agriculture has always been at the heart of Westen’s life. Growing up on his family’s century-old farm, he could often be found on a tractor alongside his dad and brother, helping to continue the proud 100-year legacy of the Burkhart place. That deep-rooted connection to the land inspired his future goals.
This fall, Westen began his studies at Colorado State University, majoring in Agricultural Business with hopes of becoming an agricultural lender — a career that will allow him to continue supporting farmers and ranchers across Colorado. He spent this past summer interning with the Bank of Colorado, where he still works while attending CSU.
When Westen dressed in his blue corduroy jacket one final time in Indianapolis to accept his American Degree, it symbolized the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. In earning this honor, he not only represented the Sargent FFA Chapter, but the entire San Luis Valley community.
Congratulations, Westen Burkhart — your hard work, leadership, and passion for agriculture have made your community proud. We can’t wait to see how you continue to make a difference in the world of agriculture!
